Travel across the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington is becoming increasingly risky as a major winter storm continues to dump heavy snow until Saturday, drastically limiting visibility and causing hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Storm Warning is in place for the Oregon Cascades’ east slopes until Saturday morning, with snow accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Sisters, Sunriver, La Pine, and Camp Sherman are experiencing severe snowfall, making mountain travel hazardous and, at times, impossible.
Further north, the highest slopes of the eastern Washington Cascades are under a winter storm warning until Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service estimates snowfall totals ranging from 10 to 16 inches around Easton and Roslyn, with high rates contributing to hazardous roadways and near-whiteout conditions at higher elevations.
Transportation officials advise drivers to postpone non-essential travel, particularly across mountain routes. Those who must travel are encouraged to pack chains, extra clothing, food, water, and emergency supplies in case they become stranded. As snow accumulates, the risk of downed trees and electrical lines increases.
Warnings are in effect until Saturday, and more advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase or travel conditions worsen.
