Wind advisory issued for North Jersey as heavy rain moves in Friday

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the majority of New Jersey, with heavy rain also expected this Friday, Dec. 19.

The NWS offices in New York and Mount Holly have both issued wind advisories covering a 24-hour period. These advisories begin around midnight on Friday for all of North Jersey and its neighboring states.

“We are anticipating heavy rain, extreme cold temperatures, and strong winds across parts of the state tonight and tomorrow morning. Stay warm and stay safe, New Jersey!” Gov. Phil Murphy posted on X.

“Powerful cold front on Friday. A warm airmass ahead of it with a period of heavy rain late tonight & Friday morning, then turning much colder Friday PM. Strong southerly winds late tonight into Friday morning, then strong west to northwest winds Friday PM,” the NWS Mount Holly posted.

Forecasters from the NWS New York anticipate winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph and potentially hitting 60 mph on Friday morning.

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the NWS advisories stated.

Most of North Jersey could see over an inch of rain, while coastal areas are expected to receive lower amounts.

High temperatures on Friday will reach the upper 50s before the arriving cold front brings significantly lower temperatures for the weekend.
