A powerful winter storm that swept across Illinois on Saturday caused hundreds of crashes, according to state police.
Illinois State Police reported that more than 400 vehicles were damaged on state roadways as the storm dropped over 10 inches of snow in some areas. Strong winds also created blowing and drifting snow, making driving conditions even more dangerous.
At least 66 crashes resulted in injuries to drivers or passengers, though authorities did not release details about how severe those injuries were.
State police said more than 300 motorists needed roadside assistance during the storm. Many drivers had spun into ditches or medians along highways as conditions worsened.
Officials had urged residents to avoid traveling Saturday, with snowfall rates hitting an inch or more per hour in some spots. Gusty winds—topping 40 miles per hour in many areas—added to the hazards on the roads.
Some regions experienced mixed precipitation as temperatures rose slightly above freezing. When temperatures dropped again later in the evening, slick spots quickly formed on roadways.
