Illinois State Police reminding residents of safe winter driving tips
(NBC CHICAGO) — A winter storm that swept across Illinois on Saturday caused hundreds of crashes, according to state police.
Illinois State Police reported that more than 400 crashes damaged vehicles on state roadways during the storm, which dropped over 10 inches of snow in some areas. Strong winds also created blowing and drifting snow, making travel even more hazardous.
At least 66 of the crashes resulted in injuries, though officials did not release details on how severe those injuries were.
More than 300 motorists needed roadside assistance, with many sliding into ditches or medians along highways, police said.
Authorities had urged residents to stay off the roads Saturday as snowfall rates reached an inch or more per hour in some locations. Later in the day, wind gusts topping 40 mph reduced visibility and worsened conditions.
Some parts of Illinois also experienced mixed precipitation as temperatures briefly rose above freezing. When temperatures dropped again in the evening, slick patches formed on roads, adding to the dangers.
