Winter Storm Warnings for 6 States as Snowfall Hits Up to 12 Inches

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for six states, with up to 12 inches of snow expected between Sunday, Dec. 7, and Monday, Dec. 8.

Alaska, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming are all under winter weather advisories. Snowfall is expected to range from trace amounts in Chicago to more than a foot in parts of Alaska over the next 24 hours.

Alaska Prepares for Heavy Snow
Cities including Elfin Cove and Pelican could see 8 to 12 inches of snow, while Kake and Port Alexander may get 3 to 5 inches, accompanied by winds exceeding 40 mph.

“A pattern change is bringing colder temperatures and strong outflow winds extending southward through the weekend. This pattern, in combination with prolonged moisture, is producing accumulating heavy snow for the Haines area,” the National Weather Service said.

Snow continues over the Icy Strait Corridor as the arctic boundary moves south of the Hoonah–Juneau area. The next band of heavier precipitation is expected Sunday morning.

Other States Facing Snow
Wyoming could see up to 10 inches of snow in the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains. In Michigan, Central and Western Chippewa counties may receive up to six inches.

“During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions,” the NWS warned.

Parts of South Carolina and Virginia are expected to receive up to five inches of snow.
