Winter Storm Watch Issued For Southern Colorado And New Mexico: 5 To 11 Inches Of Snow Likely Thursday Night

Travel across southern Colorado and into northern New Mexico may become hazardous beginning Thursday afternoon, as a developing winter storm brings accumulating snow, strong gusts, and limited visibility during peak commute hours.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Winter Storm Watch for northern El Paso County, which includes Black Forest, Monument Ridge, and locations along the Rampart Range below 7,500 feet, from Thursday afternoon until Friday morning. Snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are predicted, with wind gusts exceeding 40 mph. These conditions might result in snow-covered roadways and drifting, particularly along north-south routes.

The snow threat extends south and west into the Wet Mountains, where 6 to 11 inches of accumulation are likely by Friday afternoon. Walsenburg, Trinidad, and parts of Las Animas County may experience 4 to 7 inches, as well as gusty winds that restrict visibility even further. Some sections of Highway 160 and other mountain roads may become difficult or impassable at times.

In New Mexico, the National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Union County and Raton Pass from late Thursday night until Friday evening. Snowfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are forecast, with up to 6 inches on Raton Pass. Blowing snow may result in near-whiteout conditions along I-25, especially Friday morning.

Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary driving during the storm window, allow for extra stopping distance, and maintain winter emergency kits in their vehicles. As the system gets closer, additional advisories or warning upgrades may be issued.
