Freezing rain and mixed winter precipitation are likely to affect travel across most of eastern and central Wisconsin beginning Thursday evening, prompting multiple Winter Weather Advisories for the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, advisories will go into effect between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. CST Thursday and last until Friday morning, with expiry times varying from 6 a.m. to noon CST depending on region.
Counties affected include Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Wood, Portage, Waushara, Brown, Door, Outagamie, Shawano, Waupaca, Kewaunee, Calumet, Manitowoc, and Winnebago, among others. Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Wausau, Stevens Point, Rhinelander, Antigo, Marinette, Sturgeon Bay, Manitowoc, and Wisconsin Rapids are among the affected communities.
Forecasters predict freezing rain and mixed precipitation, with ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch overall and up to two tenths of an inch locally north of Highway 29. Some regions, especially in northern counties, may see light snow or sleet accumulations of up to one inch.
The National Weather Service cautions that roads, bridges, sidewalks, and overpasses may become slick and hazardous, making travel difficult on Friday morning. Ice accumulation on electrical lines may potentially cause isolated power outages.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and pay particular attention to road conditions. Before traveling, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation suggests that you call 511 to check current conditions.
Winter weather advisories are issued when conditions are predicted to create travel delays and modest infrastructure disruptions, especially during peak traffic periods.
