NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A North Miami Beach woman was arrested Saturday after shooting a man four times outside her home, claiming he tried to break in, authorities said.
Deanna Nadine Bernard, 25, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
According to an arrest report, police first responded to Bernard’s home shortly before 11 a.m. after receiving a call reporting that a man was attempting to enter the residence and making threats to kill. Officers said the man left the area before they arrived.
Bernard and a witness told police the man tried to get into the home but was unable to enter the curtilage, which was secured by a locked gate, the report stated. Surveillance video reportedly shows the man pacing back and forth while attempting to access the gate before leaving.
The witness told officers the man said, “I’m coming inside to kill you,” while trying to enter the home, according to the report.
About 30 minutes after a detective left the scene, Bernard called the detective and reported that the man had returned, but the call disconnected. When the detective called back, Bernard said she had just shot the man in the leg, authorities said.
Officers returned to the scene, applied tourniquets to the man, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported him to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital as a trauma alert.
Surveillance video shows the man returning to Bernard’s home in a Toyota Camry and parking in the driveway, police said. At one point, he entered Bernard’s backyard before a witness arrived in a taxi.
According to police, the man then walked over to the taxi and attempted to kick it. Bernard later exited her home and began arguing verbally with the man.
Authorities said Bernard did not remain inside her home and instead walked toward the man. Surveillance video shows the man walking around the taxi as Bernard approached and fired three shots at him.
Police said the man eventually fell to the ground, and Bernard moved closer before firing two additional shots while he was on the ground with his hands raised.
Based on the video evidence, investigators determined Bernard did not appear to be in fear for her safety at the time of the shooting.
As of Monday afternoon, Bernard remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with her bond listed as “to be set,” according to online jail records.
The man’s identity and his relationship to Bernard have not been released.
