An Upstate New York woman has been arrested after a disturbing act of animal cruelty in Montgomery County left a dog seriously injured and the community outraged.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Desiree R. Teater of Fonda, New York, was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony under state law.
Deputies responded to a home on Old Trail Road in the Town of Mohawk on November 3 after receiving a report of animal cruelty. Investigators said Teater threw a dog off a porch during a domestic dispute, causing the animal to suffer two fractures in one of its legs.
The dog’s owner, assisted by responding deputies, took the injured pet to a local animal hospital for treatment.
Teater later admitted to intentionally injuring the dog during an interview at the sheriff’s office. She was charged and released with an appearance ticket for a later court date.
Authorities and community members have condemned the act, expressing hope that the courts will take the case seriously.
If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, authorities urge you to report it immediately to local law enforcement, the SPCA, or another humane agency.
Albany County also maintains an Animal Abuser Registry, established in 2010 and managed by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, to protect animals and inform the public about convicted abusers.
