Woman charged in connection to 2023 crash that seriously injured 2

BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC) — An East Moline woman is facing charges after police say she caused a 2023 crash that left two people seriously injured.

According to an arrest affidavit, 30-year-old Mary Ashley Brown was taken into custody Monday in connection with the incident.

Police said Brown failed to yield while turning left and collided with another vehicle around 9:30 a.m. on April 15, 2023, at Middle Road and the I-74 westbound off-ramp.

A man and a woman inside the other vehicle were seriously hurt. The affidavit states the man suffered a broken sternum and broken ribs. The woman had multiple fractured vertebrae in her neck and back, a fractured ankle and pelvis, and spent six days at the University of Iowa Hospital before continuing recovery in a care facility.

Brown told officers she had smoked marijuana about seven hours before the crash, according to the affidavit. A blood test later confirmed the presence of THC.

She is charged with two counts of serious injury by vehicle, a Class D felony, and first-offense OWI, a serious misdemeanor.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 24, and Brown’s bond has been set at $10,000.
